Many Parisians don’t care for buying food from supermarkets. Those in the know, who value nutrition and full flavours, would much rather purchase their fresh meats, cheeses and fish from one or more of the dozens of Paris open air food markets. Such markets are a long standing and well loved tradition in the capital, and understandably so, as they can provide fresher, tastier and less costly produce than the supermarkets have to offer. Much of the food on display in the brightly coloured stalls comes from local farms, so it’s environmentally friendly, too.
The markets are cheerful and exciting, with vendors calling out to prospective customers to sample their wares, and a distinctive social aspect, making the whole atmosphere simply irresistible. In the 5th three markets are particularly popular, offering great quality and variety three days each week.
Marche Monge offers a village style charm on Wednesday and Friday from 7.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and Sunday from 7.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Marche Maubert is one of the oldest markets in the city, with its roots in the Middle Ages. Marche Port-Royal can be found on the boulevard of the same name. These two open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and on Saturday from 7.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
