The Gardens of the Orient, from April 19th to September 25th, 2016

Combining nature and culture, this exhibition evokes a dreamlike ambience. The Gardens of the Orient; From the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal can be found at the heart of the Museum of the Arab World Institute, only 500 metres from the Hotel Royal Cardinal. The square of the Institute has been converted by the landscape architect Michel Pena into a temporary garden of exceptional beauty representing a contemporary interpretation of Eastern gardens. Wander until you discover the astonishing vegetal anamorphic created by the optical illusion specialist, François Abelanet. Enjoy a sensory journey amidst palms, orange trees, jasmine and other exotic greenery. Inside the museum you’ll discover an exhibition tracing the history of Oriental gardens from ancient times to today via some three hundred works of art, as well as photographs, scale models and other artefacts.

Treasures to Wear, until August 28th, 2016

If you’re a lover of art and precious stones, then you’ll wish to remain in the atmospheric halls of the Arab World Institute for another exhibition that is currently running there; Treasures to Wear; the Jewellery and Ornaments of the Maghreb. This breath-taking display of various mid-19th to early 20th century jewellery items from lands such as Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria will give you a new appreciation of the skill and finesse of the artisans who created them. On loan for the first time from the collection of Malou and Jean-François Bouvier are over 250 utilitarian or ornamental items, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches and anklets, which reflect the diversity and vibrant culture of the Maghreb region of Northwest Africa.

Hugo; A Family of Artists, April 14th to August 30th, 2016

Now we steer you towards the other side of the Seine and the Maison Victor Hugo, located in the beautiful Place des Vosges, where a new exhibition will deepen your understanding of the great author, his life and his family. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover the considerable artistic heritage of the Hugo family by way of the drawings and paintings of the writer, as well as the artistic creations of his wife, sister, nephew, children and grandchildren. Step back into the past in the evocative surroundings of this family home where the great man lived from 1832 to 1848.

If it’s a cultural holiday you’re looking for, then we at the Hotel Royal Cardinal will be delighted to assist with recommendations that will take you into every corner of the capital!
