During your stay at the Hotel Royal Cardinal, don’t miss taking a trip to the Palace of Versailles, easily accessible by public transport. Every Saturday evening this summer from June 15th to September 21st, 2019, this former royal residence invites you to its Grandes Eaux Nocturnes (Night Fountains Show) event and the Royal Serenade in the Hall of Mirrors!
The Grandes Eaux Nocturnes, a spellbinding spectacle
From June 15th, summer Saturday evenings in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles offer a show composed by artists of light and scenography that will enchant and charm you. Baroque music fills the park of this UNESCO World Heritage Site as night falls and its sumptuous French-style formal gardens sparkle with a thousand points of light. Adding to the magical atmosphere that the melodies bring to the groves and sculptures is a magnificent choreography of water and lights dancing on the cascading spray of the fountains. The focus of this incredible spectacle is the fountains and basins designed by Andre Le Nôtre, the landscape architect and gardener to the court of King Louis XIV, which seem to come alive through masterful compositions of water jets, gorgeous water effects, cascades of light and baroque choreographies. The splendour of the court and the music of the Sun King, as interpreted by Reinhard Goebel accompanied by his Musica Antiqua Köln orchestra suddenly flood this park with the enchantment of the days of old.
Wander at will between the Enceladus Grove, the Mirror Pool, the Nymphs’ Bath and the fountains of Apollo, the Four Seasons and Neptune and succumb to the spell of the place and the technological sorcery that enhances the wonders of yesteryear. The lasers will pierce the night from the Colonnade Grove as you watch Enceladus endure the punishment of Zeus. This sumptuous show will end with a firework display that you can admire from the Grande Perspective.

The Royal Serenade in the Hall of Mirrors; scenes from the court of the king
Before the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes, treat yourself to another trip back in time to the royal court of the 17th century by attending the Royal Serenade amidst the shimmering gold and multiple reflections of the Hall of Mirrors illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. For 50 minutes, sarabandes and minuets are revived by musicians and dancers in magnificent period costumes recreating the feel of the era of the Sun King’s court. You will witness lavish scenes such as the sultan's reception at the court as well as dashing sword duels. The Royal Serenade is performed by L'Eventail, a baroque dance company boasting a varied repertoire of choreographies dating from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as original historical shows based on outlines and concepts of the period.
