Ah Paris! Oui! But a Paris Beach with Paris Plages?

Ah Paris! Oui! But a Paris Beach with Paris Plages?

Why go to the Côte d'Azur when you can take your ease on a beach in Paris? Each summer the Paris Plages event finds the banks of the Seine transformed into beaches, with a whole host of activities on offer throughout the day. Then, in the evenings, various delightful parts of the city offer free screenings of movies beneath the stars.

Swimming, sports and relaxation in Paris Plages

It’s an undeniable fact that Paris can get pretty hot in the summer. So it is that switched-on Parisians take a little time out for some rest and relaxation by enjoying a beach-like ambience in the heart of the capital. How is this possible? Paris Plages is the answer. A brainchild of the former Paris mayor, Bertrand Delanoe in the early years of this century, Paris Plages brings all the fun of the seaside to the centre of this great city. For this free summer event, around 5,000 tonnes of sand are shipped in to build over 3.5 kilometres of temporary beach.

This year, Paris Plages is taking place from July 20th to August 18th. There will be sun loungers, deckchairs, palm trees and parasols installed, and varied free activities on offer, including beach volleyball, rugby, petanque, table football, plus boating at the Bassin de la Villette. There will be playgrounds for the little ones and plenty of food, drink and ice cream stands so that you can remain on the beach all day if you wish.

In fact, Paris Plages has proven so popular that it’s even spread to the suburbs, so that now you can find sun, sand, sports, snack bars and relaxation in La Courneuve, Puteaux, Bagnolet, Saint Ouen and Aubervilliers.

It’s time for the fifteenth edition of Cinema au Clair de Lune

Then, when the sun sinks in the west and you've had your fill of beach resort fun, it’s time to think about how you’ll spend your evening. One immensely appealing option is to watch a movie in the open air in some picturesque Parisian location. Yes, it’s time for the fifteenth edition of Cinema au Clair de Lune, organised by the Forum des Images. During this film festival with a difference, giant screens are set up in charming spots dotted around the city, including the Place des Vosges and Montmartre. Take along a picnic, and a blanket in case it turns chilly, and discover some of the great movies which have used Paris as their setting over the years, all free of charge. This year Cinema au Clair de Lune is scheduled to run from July 30th to August 8th. The programme will, as always, include some of the classic movies of the past and a few which are a little more up to date. The communal atmosphere and friendliness of these screenings is legendary, so don’t miss out on a chance to join in with this unique event.
